Causing Miracles In Other People's Lives
By Cornelis Boertjens

The most amazing thing happened to me a while ago. My wife Linda was 7 months pregnant and we tended to do things on weekends that won’t be as easy to do anymore once the baby is here. We went out for dinner and decided to go to the casino. We had never been to the casino here so it sounded like fun.

We walked into town and on the way there we passed a homeless man sleeping on a bench. Then this thought popped into my head: “I give 10% of everything I win to this man”. I had never heard of someone winning money in a casino, so I didn’t pay a lot of attention to the thought as we walked into the casino.

Both having the tendency to get carried away playing games, we decided to play with 50 dollars each and stick to that as the maximum. Remember, we were just going for fun! After walking around for a while and being amazed by the massive number of people staring at their machines like zombies out of a horror movie, we positioned ourselves on a French Roulette table.

We won a bit and lost a bit. Put some money on “black” and “odd”, which does not really do much. Then, at the same time Linda and I put a chip on number 14. This is our lucky number, since we first met on 14 July. We are great believers of visualization (we have been creating a Vision Board for years) and we “knew” this number was going to drop. And it did! We left the table with $300 pure profit. Not bad for a night of fun.

As we walked back and were about to get into to the car, suddenly my initial thought came back to me. Would that thought have been the reason we won in the first place? I think that everything happens for a reason and you do not mess with the Universe. So I had to walk back and see if the homeless man was still there. And of course, he was. I looked into my wallet and noticed I had $5 in small change. I woke him up and of course this gave him a fright. He must have thought I was a cop so he instantly said; “I have no home”. I replied: “I know”, gave him the money and walked back to my wife.

I looked at my wife and started crying because I was overwhelmed with sadness and happiness at the same time. I also apologized to Linda for the fact I have been so financially driven lately and complaining about not having enough. I was disgusted with myself and this whole event gave me a bit of a wakeup call. Often I get caught up in the whole “looking good, avoiding looking bad” thing and tend to forget that we have such a great life and have a world of opportunity. We need to stop waiting for miracles to happen and realize that we are the causers of the miracles ourselves!

If you wondered what happened to the other $25, we have donated that to the City Mission, which provides food and shelter for the homeless.
